Winder Power

The Brief

Winder Power, a UK specialist in the design, manufacture, installation and servicing of distribution, grid and power transformers, was facing a significant recruitment challenge. They needed to attract and hire specialist transformer engineers with the right high-level experience in the power and utilities industry.

Despite their strong reputation in transformer manufacture and services, Winder Power found that suitable engineers with the niche skills required were in short supply. They needed a recruitment partner who understood their sector, could access deep engineering talent, and could support not just the hiring process but also ongoing engagement and retention.

The SOLUTION

Working in partnership with Winder Power, Hernshead Recruitment established an exclusive recruitment engagement focused entirely on specialist transformer engineering roles. Our approach included:

  • Detailed market mapping of the transformer and power engineering talent pool, identifying candidates with experience in transformer design, installation, commissioning, refurbishment, site works from 11 kV to 400 kV, and associated HV/LV transformer services.

  • Brand positioning, helping Winder Power to present a compelling proposition to engineers by emphasising the complexity and scale of their transformer work, their British manufacturing credentials, and their long-standing reputation within the UK grid environment.

  • Candidate engagement and screening, ensuring that each candidate was assessed for relevant technical experience, transformer-specific skills (design, services, installation), and cultural fit with Winder Power’s team. We managed the entire process from introduction through to offer and onboarding.

  • Ongoing support, recognising that specialist engineers often require tailored support. We maintained contact with both the placed engineers and Winder Power post-employment to ensure a smooth transition and help drive retention.

The RESULTS

  • Successfully placed a number of specialist transformer engineers into Winder Power’s team, candidates whom they had previously been unable to find through conventional recruitment channels.

  • The engineers have delivered strong performance in transformer design, manufacture, on-site service and high-voltage work, enabling Winder Power to strengthen their engineering capability across distribution, power and grid transformer services.

  • Winder Power now has a continuing recruitment partnership with Hernshead, with confidence that they will receive quality talent and dedicated support every time.
